Founded in 1967 as part of Ontario’s provincial initiative to establish career-focused post-secondary institutions across the province, Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology—commonly known as Northern College—has spent nearly six decades serving the educational needs of Northeastern Ontario. A Vast Catchment Area and Four Campuses

Northern College’s reach is extraordinary. Its catchment area spans 58,000 square miles (150,200 square kilometres), serving more than 65 communities across Northeastern Ontario. The college operates four main campuses located in Timmins (Porcupine), Kirkland Lake, Moosonee, and Temiskaming Shores (Haileybury). The Timmins campus, founded in 1967 alongside the college itself, serves as the institution’s headquarters. The Haileybury School of Mines: A Legacy of Excellence

One of Northern College’s most distinguished assets is the Haileybury School of Mines (HSM), which predates the college itself. Founded in 1912, HSM has a long and respected history, with over 2,000 graduates pursuing careers in mining and mining-related fields throughout North America and worldwide. Mining subjects were first introduced in 1912 in conjunction with Haileybury High School, and by 1917, a dedicated building—known as the Mill—was equipped by the many mines of northern Ontario for the treatment of gold and silver ores. Applied Research, Innovation, and Partnerships

Northern College is actively engaged in applied research and innovation. The Applied Research, Entrepreneurship & Innovation (AREI) department hosts the Innovation Hub, where students and faculty collaborate with local businesses to solve real-world problems and develop new knowledge, products, and technologies. The Innovation Hub, opened in 2022 at the Timmins campus, provides an immersive experiential learning, entrepreneurial, research, and commercialization space. Beyond its northern Ontario footprint, Northern College has extended its reach internationally through a licensing agreement with Pures College of Technology in Toronto. This collaboration allows international students to enroll in select Northern College diploma programs at the Pures Toronto location while receiving full credit and a Northern College diploma upon graduation.
