North Island College: 50 Years of Community-Powered Learning on British Columbia’s West Coast

Founded in 1975, North Island College (NIC) has spent half a century serving the educational needs of students across Vancouver Island and the central coast of British Columbia. What began as a small cohort of learning centres—operating out of a portable trailer in Campbell River and a few converted spaces—has grown into a comprehensive community college with four main campuses in Campbell River, the Comox Valley, Port Alberni, and Port Hardy, along with a learning centre in Ucluelet. A History of Innovation and Access

From its earliest days, NIC has done things differently. In 1977, the college launched its first mobile learning unit to reach remote west coast communities. Since its founding, CARTI has partnered with more than 85 businesses, organizations, and Indigenous communities across the region.
