A Journey from College to University

UFV’s story began on April 4, 1974, when it was founded as Fraser Valley College, a two-year community college created to meet the demand for expanded vocational training in the Fraser Valley communities. Over the following decades, the institution grew rapidly. In 1991, it gained university-college status and became the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV), with degree-granting authority. UCFV offered its first baccalaureate degrees in 1992 and awarded its first master’s degrees in 2007. Campuses Across the Fraser Valley and Beyond

UFV’s main campus is located in Abbotsford, the third most diverse city in Canada. The Abbotsford campus features a large library, a sports centre, a four-floor residence with 102 double-occupancy suites, and a new 50,000-square-foot student centre. UFV is also home to several research centres, including the Community Health and Social Innovation (CHASI) Hub, the Food and Agriculture Institute (FAI), the South Asian Studies Institute, the Esposito Family Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and the Berry Environmental Resilience Research (BERRi) Centre. In September 2025, UFV was designated as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus, joining a global network of institutions reimagining the role of post-secondary education in driving social innovation, equity, and systems-level change.
