The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta: A Century of Public Protection
For over a century, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) has stood as a cornerstone of professional regulation in Western Canada. Established on April 10, 1920, APEGA regulates the practices of engineering and geoscience in Alberta on behalf of the Government of Alberta through the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. As the largest regulator of self-regulated professionals in Western Canada, with more than 70,000 registrants, APEGA plays an indispensable role in safeguarding public safety while driving the province’s economic prosperity.
Mandate and Regulatory Functions
APEGA’s primary and overriding responsibility is to protect the public interest through the effective regulation of engineering and geoscience. This singular focus distinguishes APEGA from a professional association; it does not advocate for its registrants’ self-interest, as such advocacy would conflict with the independence required of a regulator. Instead, APEGA fulfills its mandate through a comprehensive framework of licensing, standard-setting, enforcement, and continuing professional development. Buy fake certificate online.
The Association’s core regulatory functions include licensing individuals and companies that wish to practise engineering or geoscience in Alberta. Applicants who meet APEGA’s rigorous standards for ethical, professional, and technical competency earn the right to practise and use reserved titles and designations. APEGA also sets practice standards, develops codes of conduct and ethics, investigates complaints of unskilled practice and unprofessional conduct, and takes action against individuals and organizations that practise without licences or permits. Through practice reviews and the enforcement of compulsory continuing professional development, APEGA ensures that its members remain competent throughout their careers.
Commitment to Continuing Competence
Recognizing that professional competence is not a static achievement but an ongoing commitment, APEGA has implemented a robust Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program. Effective November 1, 2025, a revised CPD practice standard requires licensed professionals to complete mandatory online learning modules and conduct annual personal competency evaluations. This program ensures the health, safety, and welfare of the public by requiring that professionals engage in lifelong learning on an annual basis. Under the forthcoming Professional Governance Act, this will transition into a Continuing Competence Program, further reinforcing APEGA’s dedication to maintaining high professional standards.

A Century of Service and a Modern Future
In 2020, APEGA celebrated a century of serving the public interest. Throughout its history, APEGA members have played a critical role in building a sustainable and diversified economy by developing innovative solutions across all industries. From advancing transplant technology to pioneering environmental stewardship, APEGA’s registrants have shaped Alberta’s identity and quality of life.
Looking forward, APEGA is embracing modernization through the Professional Governance Act (Bill 40), introduced in the Alberta legislature in March 2025. This legislation will bring 22 professional regulatory organizations under one unified act, enhancing governance, accountability, and professional conduct while preserving APEGA’s century-old mandate of acting in the best interests of Albertans and public safety. As APEGA Registrar and CEO Jay Nagendran stated, the Act provides a significant opportunity to modernize the regulatory framework while enabling engineers and geoscientists to remain focused on protecting the public interest and driving innovation.
APEGA’s vision—”Driving Alberta forward with courage and innovation”—captures the spirit of an organization that has protected the public for over 100 years while empowering professionals to build a better future. Through rigorous regulation, unwavering commitment to public safety, and forward-looking modernization, APEGA continues to fulfill its mission of safeguarding the public welfare of all Albertans.
