From Community College to University

Founded in 1971, the institution began its journey as a community college serving the greater Edmonton region. Over the decades, it expanded its academic offerings and grew in stature. In 2009, the institution was officially named Grant MacEwan University by an Order in Council, and in 2013 it was rebranded as MacEwan University for communications and marketing purposes. The university takes its name from Dr. J.W. Grant MacEwan—a distinguished professor, historian, author of nearly 50 books, former mayor of Calgary, and lieutenant governor of Alberta. A Campus Designed for Connection

MacEwan’s main campus is situated on the traditional lands of Treaty Six Territory in downtown Edmonton, offering students immediate access to the city’s vibrant cultural, dining, and entertainment scene.
